How to Tag WhatsApp Groups in Your Status

WhatsApp Groups in Your Status

WhatsApp recently introduced a new feature in the beta version that allows users to tag (mention) entire WhatsApp groups in their status updates. Previously, only individual users could be tagged, but now you can send a notification to the entire group by using “@group_name”.

  • WhatsApp is now testing the ability to tag an entire group in your status update.
  • Previously, you could only tag up to 5 people on a pay-to-play basis, but now group tagging is possible in the beta version.

2. How does it work?

  • When you create a status (with a photo or video) and write the group name with “@”, the group option appears in the beta version.
  • Once tagged:
  1. A message appears in the group chat that says “X tagged your group in a status”.
  2. All members of the group (who have not muted the group) receive a notification
  3. Status viewers’ privacy settings are not affected—even those you don’t normally show status to may see this specific status

3. Restrictions and features

  • Available in beta version:

This feature has been released to limited beta testers; general release is yet to come.

  • Specific restrictions:

Members will not receive notifications if the group has been muted.

The size of the tagged group or the number of groups that can be tagged is not yet clear.

Reshare option: Members can reshare statuses on their statuses, without the original poster’s name being displayed.

4. User feedback

Users on Reddit say:

  • “Hey everyone, I’ve been getting these notifications when someone mentions a group in status. This group has been muted; however, when someone mentions the group… It’s annoying
  • Such users still cannot stop notifications, even if the group is muted.

5. Hopes for the future

  • General release:

It will be available to all users after the beta rollout is complete.

  • Additional controls:

WhatsApp may add admin controls or notification mute options.

  • Group statuses are possible:

In the future, you will be able to post statuses directly from the group chat info (under development according to Beebom)

6. If you don’t have the feature

  • Join the WhatsApp beta program from the Google Play Store and update.
  • Reinstall your phone or clear the cache and log in again.
  • Be patient—this feature will be rolled out to general users gradually.

If you’re an Android beta user, you can tag the entire group in a single status post using “@” + the group name, which will notify non-muted members. However, users have complained about the lack of control over notifications, which will be addressed in the future. The feature is rolling out to general users soon, but later you’ll be able to share statuses from a direct group.
