Importance and Critical Aspects of the Program

  • Orange Line Metro is Lahore’s first driverless metro rail system, which is about 27 kilometers long and facilitates about 250,000 users daily
  • The project is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and is seen as valuable both locally and internationally
  • But despite this, it still requires financial subsidy. The Punjab government has approved a subsidy package of Rs 7 billion for 2025‑26, to cover operational costs, maintenance, loan repayment, electricity, and staff salaries, and to keep the fare cheap (around Rs 30‑40 per journey)

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s initiatives

  • The old token system used in Metro Bus and Orange Line will be abolished, and a digital payment system will be implemented, in which travel will be possible through credit/debit cards, mobile apps, NFC, and T‑Cash Card
  • A universal transit card will be introduced for all mass transit, including a separate card for students.
  • Electric buses and BRT services have been announced to start in various districts from August 2025, including Orange Line and Red Line BRT services in Faisalabad
